Conference: Richard Demarco Archive as Gesamtkunstwerk
30 June - Wrocław / 1 July - Sokołowsko
as part of: CONTEXTS: The 6th International Sokołowsko Festival of Ephemeral Art
produced by: IN SITU Contemporary Art Foundation and the Sokołowsko International Cultural Laboratory

Every year CONTEXTS pays tribute to an outstanding artist of unquestionable merit. In 2016, the festival honours Richard Demarco, the extraordinary artist and curator who played a major role in the visual arts and theatrical programmes at the Edinburgh Festival. He is the creator of an exceptional archive, a veritable Gesamtkunstwerk, consisting of unique documentation of international art since the 1960s.

Richard Demarco is a great ambassador for Polish art and culture. He has been coming to Poland since 1968 and brought about pioneering exhibitions of Polish contemporary art during the Cold War era. He introduced Tadeusz Kantor and Cricot 2 to an international audience and introduced Kantor to Joseph Beuys as part of his work to heal the wounds of war and unresolved conflict between Poland and Germany. Richard Demarco's contribution to opening Europe to Polish art cannot be overestimated.
In 2016 Wrocław is honoured with the title of European Capital of Culture. The opening day of the conference for CONTEXTS will take place in the recently renovated Barbara which also serves as the information centre for the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016.

Festival CONTEXTS takes place in Sokołowsko, Lower Silesia from 1-5 July 2016. The aspect of forced emigration features significantly in this region which was part of Germany until 1945. After World War II, the original inhabitants were transferred to Germany. Poles from the Eastern territories, which had become part of the Soviet Union, were transferred into Lower Silesia.

In this context, as well as in the context of recent political developments involving immigration and cultural assimilation, the theme of the festival becomes even more significant.
